Can a defibrillator be used multiple times?

An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is an emergency assistive device designed to save the lives of people suffering cardiac arrest in public places. A built-in analysis program automatically detects the heart rate of a cardiac arrest patient. If a defibrillable heart rhythm is detected, the AED will automatically charge and deliver an electric shock to terminate the fatal heart rhythm and give the heart a chance to beat again. Therefore, regular maintenance of your defibrillator is extremely important.

US research data shows that among 4,000 patients with sudden cardiac death, only 9% survived through manual cardiopulmonary resuscitation; while among patients who also received AED defibrillation, the survival rate was as high as 38%. This means that one in three people can be successfully rescued after resuscitation with an AED.

For patients with sudden cardiac death, time is of the essence; the chance of successful resuscitation is higher within four minutes, and the chance of survival after four minutes is slim. Therefore, time is of the essence. Using an AED within one minute can increase the success rate by 7% to 10%, or even 90%.

Can an AED be used only once?

The AED main unit is reusable. You only need to replace the batteries and electrode pads regularly. The service life of the host is 8 years, after which it is recommended to dispose of it as scrap. The electrode pads are disposable and need to be replaced after one use or the shelf life expires. The shelf life is 2 years. The battery is a consumable item and cannot be charged. The power indicator light shows the second one from the left and it is recommended to replace the battery. Number of runs: Supports discharge defibrillation 200 times/run 7.5h.

Can the AED battery be charged?

The battery cannot be recharged and needs to be replaced with a new one in time when it expires. The AED battery is a disposable replaceable lithium battery. Because the AED should ensure that any time can be immediately put into use, if the AED battery can be recharged, it means that there is a period of time that can not be used normally, which will increase the risk of hidden danger.

It is not recommended to take out the battery in order to save electricity usually, because the AED will self-test at 12:00 noon every day to check whether the AED host, battery, electrode pads are normal or not, if not, the AED will alarm to remind.

What do I need to do to keep the defibrillator in standby mode?

1. The defibrillator performs self-test every day when it is turned on to ensure that it can be turned on and used normally. After turning on the defibrillator, check the defibrillator battery level or check the battery for a low battery alarm. If necessary, replace the battery. Prompt replacement of pads and batteries can save lives, and a well-maintained defibrillator is an important aid in recovery.

2. Check whether the defibrillator defibrillation electrodes are in place, and clean and wipe the instrument regularly. If the handle electrodes or slot discharge electrodes are oxidized or corroded, the handle electrodes and handle slot discharge electrodes need to be cleaned and deoxidized.

3. The heart conduction wire of the defibrillator is intact and not damaged, and the electrode pads are connected correctly and intact. Defibrillator conductive paste is stored with the device in sufficient quantity to ensure ready use.

4. Rechargeable batteries and high-voltage capacitors should be maintained regularly. Carry out a charge and discharge test, and observe the usage of the built-in battery when the power is turned off. The built-in battery needs to be charged and discharged regularly, usually 1 to 2 times a month.

Battery life depends on frequency and duration of use. The normal service life of lithium batteries is about 2 years, so the batteries should be replaced every 2 years.

Remember, an AED is an emergency rescue device that can provide critical assistance in the event of cardiac arrest, giving the patient valuable resuscitation time. Remember to participate in relevant first aid training in time to improve your first aid skills.
